1. Update QuickBooks

Here’s how to update your accounting software to the latest release:  

    • Navigate to Help at the top of QuickBooks.

    • Select Update QuickBooks Desktop. 

    • This will open the Update QuickBooks window.

    • Go to Update now.

    • Mark the Reset Updates checkbox to clear the previous updates.

    • Hit on Update Now.

    • Close and restart your computer, then open QuickBooks again.

2. Run QuickBooks File Doctor 

Follow the steps below to fix common company file and network connectivity issues. To access the File Doctor utility, you must download and install the tool Hub, as the standalone version is unavailable.

a. Download and install QuickBooks Tool Hub 

QuickBooks Tool Hub is a launchpad for various tools and errors that help fix problems and errors in many scenarios. For a better experience, we recommend using QuickBooks Tool Hub on Windows 10 64-bit.

    • Exit QuickBooks Desktop.

    • Get the most recent version of Tool Hub (1.6.0.8) of the QuickBooks Tool Hub. Once the file is downlaoded, save it somewhere you can easily it such as Downloads folder or your Windows desktop. 

      Note: If you have installed the QB Tool Hub, check the utility version in the Home tab. The version will be displayed at the bottom.       

    • Locate the file you just downloaded such as QuickBooksToolHub.exe.                                                                                                                                                                                                                       

    • Adhere to the on-screen instructions and agree with the product’s terms & conditions to install the tool.

    • Once done, double-click on the Windows desktop to launch the tool hub.

b. Run QuickBooks File Doctor 

    • Launch QB Tool Hub.

    • Choose Company File Issues from the left pane.

    • Hit on Run QuickBooks File Doctor. The tool might take one minute or more to open.

      Note: If the QuickBooks File Doctor doesn’t open, manually search for File Doc and select it to open.

    • In the File Doctor, choose the company file from the dropdown menu. If you don’t find the file, click Browse and look for your file.

    • Hit on Check your file and then Continue.

    • Enter the QuickBooks admin password to allow the tool to scan your company file.

    • Select Next.

The total scan time depends on the size of your company file and can take up to 10-15 minutes. The scan may state that it failed, even if it fixes your problem. After the scan is finished, open QuickBooks and your company file.

3. Check if Hosting is on for all workstations

Your server computer is the main computer that hosts your company's files, so hosting must be enabled on the main computer and not on the workstation.

Let's check if hosting is enabled on the workstation:

    • Go to the File menu in any of your workstations.

    • Choose Utilities from the drop-down.

    • If the option is Host multi-user access, don’t select it.

    • Perform the same steps on all of the connected computers. 

    • If the option says, Stop hosting multi-user access, select it.

4. Rename the .ND and .TLG files and run the Database Server Manager

Renaming the .ND and .TLG files, which QuickBooks Desktop uses for network communications and transaction logs, respectively, may resolve errors and problems with the company file.

When hosting the company file on a server, QuickBooks Database Server Manager must be running. If you have not done so, install the utility on the server computer and then retry opening your company file over the network.

a. Renaming the .ND and .TLG file 

    • Open the folder with your company file.

    • Find the files with the same file name as your company files but with extensions .ND and .TLG.

        - company_file.qbw.nd

        - company_file.qbw.tlg

    • Right-click each file and select Rename. Add the word OLD at the end of each file name.

      Example: company_file.qbw.nd.OLD

b. Run QuickBooks Database Server Manager 

    • Select Network Issues in the tool hub.

    • Click on QuickBooks Database Server Manager. If you haven’t installed the tool on your server computer yet, do so. 

    • Select Start Scan in QuickBooks Database Server Manager only if you see your company file. If you don’t, click Browse to the location of your company file and hit Start Scan.

    • Launch QuickBooks again and sign in to your company file.
